In light of a recent incident in Bengaluru, Karnataka, where a woman is reported to have caused a disturbance at a restaurant due to the staff’s failure to provide her with a tissue paper, the question arises as to whether the current legal framework in India allows women to make unfounded accusations against individuals when their demands are not met. Specifically, the incident raises concerns regarding whether or not women in India have been empowered to a degree that permits them to engage in such behavior with impunity.
Here’s What Happened!
On February 11, at approximately 8:15pm, a woman identified as Rajalakshmi reportedly caused a disturbance at the Nammura Upahara restaurant in Uttarahalli, allegedly due to the restaurant’s failure to provide her with a tissue paper following her dinner. According to statements made by the restaurant’s manager, Nagaraju, Rajalakshmi had ordered idli-vada and requested a tissue paper from the security guard. Upon being informed that the restaurant did not provide tissue paper, the woman reportedly reacted with anger, striking her plate against the floor and directing abusive language towards the restaurant’s staff.
Subsequently, Rajalakshmi is said to have questioned the restaurant’s manager, Nagaraju, and other staff members regarding the absence of tissue paper. According to reports, the woman even resorted to name-dropping, threatening the staff with severe consequences. As a result of her disruptive behavior, many of the restaurant’s customers left, unwilling to remain in the presence of such a scene.
When the security guard attempted to remove her from the premises, she purportedly threatened to publicly disrobe, accuse the staff of wrongdoing, and lodge a complaint with the police. In an effort to prevent further disruption, the restaurant staff ultimately returned to their duties, and Rajalakshmi remained on the premises for a period of time, continuing to direct abusive language towards the staff and damaging the restaurant’s menu board. Eventually, Nagaraju contacted the police for assistance.
Action by Police
Subramanyapura police arrested her and released her on bail.
