Bombay High Court Quashes Molestation Case against Singer Mika Singh

On Thursday, the Bombay High Court quashed by consent a first information report (FIR) of 2006 and a chargesheet alleging molestation against singer Mika Singh by model Rakhi Sawant.

A division bench of Justices AS Gadkari and SG Dige passed the order on a plea by Mika Singh to quash the case on the ground that both parties had conclusively resolved their differences.

The counsel of Rakhi Sawant informed the Court that she had no objection to the FIR against Singh being quashed.

After an incident where Mika Singh was found to forcibly kiss Rakhi Sawant during his birthday party held at a restaurant in the Mumbai suburbs, an FIR was filed on June 11, 2006, against Mika Singh. This incident was widespread in the media due to its video footage and photographs.

On her (Sawant) complaint, Singh was booked for offences under Sections 354 (molestations) and 323 (assault) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

After the incident, Mika Singh is reported to have gone missing for a few days. Afterward, he approached a sessions court for anticipatory bail. On June 17, 2006, Mika Singh’s bail was granted.

Before the High Court, Singh stated in his plea that the two parties had settled their dispute and that Sawant had even set out in a sworn affidavit that she has no objection to the Court on granting him the relief sought.

Advocate Falguni Brahmabhat who appeared for Singh, apprised the Court that the case has been in limbo for the past 17 years.

“Through chargesheet has been filed against the accused (Singh), charges are yet to be framed. Singh and Sawant have buried the hatchet, have resolved their issue, and are friends now,” she informed the Court.

After considering the submissions thoroughly, the Court quashed the case.
