On Tuesday, a Delhi Court granted interim bail to Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, Member of Parliament (MP) from Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), in the sexual harassment case filed against him.
The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Harjeet Singh Jaspal of the Rose Avenue Court permitted the interim bail plea and thus granted interim bail to Brij Bhushan Sharan and Vinod Tomar.
The Court will hear the arguments on the regular bail plea of Sharan on coming Thursday.
The Delhi Police’s Additional Public Prosecutor, Atul Srivastava informed the Court that the WFI President was not arrested and opposed the bail with the condition that he should not influence witnesses.
On July 07, Judge Jaspal gave summons to Singh and Vinod Tomar, the suspended assistant secretary of the WFI.
The Court had taken into account the Delhi Police’s charge sheet in the sexual harassment case filed by women wrestlers against Singh.
Six Indian female wrestlers have made allegations of sexual harassment against the WFI President. As per their complaints, the Police had registered a First Information Report (FIR) against him.
On June 15, 2023, the police filed a charge sheet against Singh for offences under Sections 354 (outraging modesty), 354A (sexually coloured remarks), 354D (stalking), and 506 (1) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Earlier, many wrestlers were protesting over the failure of the concerned authorities to take action against Singh for allegations levelled against him.
The wrestlers also moved the Supreme Court for the registration of an FIR against Singh.
Subsequently, the Delhi Police informed the Supreme Court that an FIR was registered against Singh and the investigation was under processing.
A minor wrestler had also made allegations against Singh. However, she later withdrew her complaint. The Delhi Police submitted a cancellation report in that case before the Court.
