A batch of petitions regarding the criminalization of marital rape will be heard in a detailed hearing by the Supreme Court on May 9. The matter was brought up by Senior Advocate Indira Jaising before a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, and she informed the bench that the order of arguments and common compilation for the case is ready. The Centre’s reply to the case is also ready but needs to be vetted, according to Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.
The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing for a batch of petitions related to the criminalization of marital rape on May 9, 2023. The court had earlier asked for a response from the Centre on these petitions on January 16. One of the petitions is related to the Delhi High Court’s split verdict on the matter, and it has been filed by Khushboo Saifi, who was one of the original petitioners in the Delhi High Court. The Delhi High Court had given a split verdict on this issue on May 11, 2022.
