JAIPUR: The Jaipur Metropolitan I family court has granted divorce to a 67-year-old retired government officer after 43 years of marriage, holding that his wife’s persistent suspicion and character assassination amounted to mental cruelty. The man had moved the divorce petition in 2021.
In its order dated August 5, Judge Virendra Kumar Jasuja allowed the plea. Sunil Sharma, counsel for the husband, said on Monday that the couple, married in 1982 and childless, had long been estranged. The husband alleged that his wife denied him access to the AC room, hurled accusations on his character, and constantly mocked him for living in a small house without amenities such as a car or domestic help.
“Sharma further stated that the wife quarreled with her husband even when he tried to sell unused household items. From the beginning of the marriage, she was allegedly suspicious and repeatedly questioned her husband’s character, he said.
According to Sharma, the prolonged discord left the husband mentally distressed, and none of the allegations made against him were substantiated in court.
The wife, however, denied these claims, asserting that she never taunted or spoke harshly to her husband. She contended that her husband merely sought a life of comfort without her responsibility and urged the court to dismiss the divorce petition.”
