Advocate Mamta Rani has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) before the Supreme Court, urging the Central government to develop guidelines for registering live-in relationships and extending social security benefits to individuals in such relationships.

The petitioner has emphasized that the lack of clear regulations for live-in relationships has resulted in an increase in crimes such as rape and murder by partners. The plea aims to ensure fairness and safety for people in live-in relationships.

Additionally, the petition highlighted that the judiciary has previously safeguarded the interests of individuals in live-in relationships, including women, men, and children born from such relationships, through various rulings.

The petitioner contended that the absence of registration for live-in relationships infringes upon constitutional rights such as the freedom to live (Article 19) and the right to life (Article 21) and personal liberty.

The petition requests the establishment of laws governing live-in relationships and urges the Central government to create a database to accurately determine the number of people in such partnerships.

The petitioner argues that this can only be accomplished by mandating registration for live-in relationships. Moreover, the petitioner contends that the lack of clear regulations for live-in relationships has resulted in a substantial rise in partner-related crimes, including severe offenses such as rape and murder.
